Intro

Throughout our history, whenever we have worked on animal protection challenges, we have always tried to address the root cause of the problem - this means working directly with the local people involved so that our solutions are sustainable and deliver lasting change.

Our holistic conservation strategy, IARconserves, is centered around working alongside local communities who are best placed to identify issues and implement solutions. Our grass roots projects are built in collaboration with local communities and designed with clear, measurable goals. Collectively, these projects form joined-up strategies that reduce the threats to nature and deliver on our vision: a world where humans and animals coexist in sustainable ecosystems.

Humanity faces threats from climate change, biodiversity loss and, as seen so clearly in recent years, disease.  It is widely recognised that the health of animals, people and the environment are inextricably linked; with IARconserves we have incorporated a ‘one-health’ approach into our conservation work.

Our Approach

Through IARconserves we have developed a holistic approach to improving the health and wellbeing of animals, people and natural environments in order to create a harmonious, sustainable ecosystem between all three.  The protection of animals and the restoration of nature are also recognised as essential tools in the fight against climate change and the threat it poses to the planet and all living things.

Animals

The protection and conservation of animals lies at the heart of all we do. We are engaged in rescue, rehabilitation and release, as well as post-release monitoring of animals that are reintroduced into the wild. Our vision is a world where people and animals coexist harmoniously in sustainable ecosystems. Our mission is to increase awareness and set up effective systems so that animals and their habitats are protected.

People

We believe that animals will thrive if the communities living alongside them also thrive. In order to protect and conserve threatened species and their habitats, we look into what is causing them to be at risk and try to find lasting solutions to the challenges they face. Many of our community initiatives provide opportunities and support for local women in particular to increase their financial and social independence.

Environment

All wild species need natural habitats and ecosystems to survive and to thrive. Every living thing exists as part of a delicate ecosystem. We work closely with local communities on a wide range of projects designed to help conserve the rainforest. These include extensive agricultural support programmes; reforestation through tree planting and mangrove restoration; forest protection patrols and fire prevention and firefighting initiatives.

Our Impact

70m

Tonnes of Carbon

Through our direct intervention and projects around the world, we have protected important natural carbon stores and prevented emissions of 70 million tonnes of carbon.

250

Orangutans Saved

Since our work began in 2009, we have rescued over 250 orangutans who have been displaced as a result of habitat loss, the pet trade and human-wildlife conflict.

99%

Survival Rate

Over a 12 month period, we have planted a total of 15,600 seedlings from 33 genera covering 30 hectares with a survival rate of 99% for all planted seedlings.

What it takes to return an “exotic pet” to the wild

The Javan slow loris is a nighttime creature that, as its name implies, moves oh-so slowly. It lives in trees alone and is adorable, with sad, round black eyes in a furry black and white head. Though it lives in the rainforests of South and Southeast Asia, you won’t likely spot one there.
